FLACK = slang word for “public relations agent” – Because that best describes the role many talented folks have performed, in one way or another, for Purdue Athletics. From the early days of Robert McMahon and Robert Woodworth as publicity directors to Karl Klages, Ted Haracz, Greg Knipping, Tom Shupe and Lisa Schmidt as sports information directors, to John DeCamp and Jim Vruggink as public relations directors, to Jay Cooperider and Tom Schott as associate ADs for communications – and the hundreds of fine assistants, interns and students who pitched in to “promote” the Boilermakers – want to celebrate and reunite!

A reunion of all former and current members of Purdue’s athletics communications army, going back more than six decades under several different headings, including Athletic Publicity, Public Relations, Sports Information and Promotions, Media Relations and Communications, is set for July 26 to 28 in West Lafayette. Families are included. Details are attached.

So, plan now and make your commitments by June 15, either by check or credit card by mail, email or online, so that the planning committee can have accurate numbers by that date. For those needing over-night hotel accommodations, a list of possible options is connected to assist attendees in making their own lodging arrangements. Here is what we have planned so far:

  • Friday night – Check-in and gathering at Bruno’s; extended gathering at Harry’s
  • Saturday and Sunday mornings – Golf on Purdue’s courses (Pre-register, please)
  • Saturday morning and early afternoon – Continued check-in and departures for walking, jogging or running tours, leaving from lobby of Football Performance Complex, including Boilermaker Special rides and tours of campus
  • Saturday mid and late afternoon – Continued check-in and departures of guided walking tours of athletic facilities; swimming, games and activities (for families with kids, depending on ages) at Rec Sports facilities; Silent Auction of Joe Tiller Memorabilia; Social hour/reception with cash bar (Pre-register, please)
  • Saturday evening – Catered barbecue dinner and program with “special guests” at Rec Sports facilities (pre-register, please); “extended social hours” at campus bars
  • Sunday morning – Church options, golf and/or brunch/lunch options TBD

“This office has always been heavily dependent on student and volunteer help,” says Tom Schott, the current Senior Associate Athletics Director for Communications. “We would like to get as many of our former staff and student members together as possible. Please help spread the word and make your plans to attend.”

This event is hosted by the Joe Tiller Chapter of the National Football Foundation.
